One of the most common questions I’m asked when I mention that I offer 3D tattooing is, “What is 3D areola tattooing?”.  The CDC estimates over 300k breast cancer diagnoses in 2024. They anticipate 100,000 of those women will undergo mastectomies. Despite these figures, this procedure is widely unknown.  I’m on a mission to change that for the women of Prescott, AZ and surrounding cities!

Areola Restoration

First things first, what is it? 3D areola tattooing is designed for women who have scars from breast surgery or if the areolas were removed during mastectomies.  I’m utilize the Vicky Martin method with my areola clients. This uses a combination of shadows and highlights in the tattoo to create ultra-realistic areolas that are 100% noninvasive.  Have you ever taken a look at a painting that looked more like a photo?  The same principle applies to areola restoration! 

Who is a Candidate for 3D Areola Tattoos?

This procedure can be done 4-6 months post-reconstructive surgery. In some cases, 12-18 months of healing is necessary. Clients who are actively undergoing chemotherapy or similar treatment are not eligible for the tattoo. All clients must be cleared by a physician. Before booking a procedure appointment, a consultation is required.

Is Paramedical Tattooing Covered by Insurance?

Clients have been successful with insurance reimbursement. Following the proedure, they submit receipts and invoices to their insurance, as it is a paramedical tattoo!  I am not credentialed through any insurance companies in order to bill them directly for the service. 

What is the Process for 3D Areola Tattoos?

3D Areola tattoos are done in two sessions.  The first tattoo session is the lengthiest at 4 hours. Once the initial work has healed 6-8 weeks later, I see my clients back for a 2-hour touch-up session.
