Since launching my training earlier this year, one of the most common questions I get asked is, “How do I become a permanent makeup artist?” The truth is, you don’t need any prior training before taking a PMU class! My course covers everything from the basics to troubleshooting difficult skin types, so there’s no need for any prior experience in permanent makeup.
The main things you need coming in are an eye for makeup and the ability to be teachable! Though you do need to complete a bloodborne pathogens training before coming in and working with a live model- this is a universal requirement, regardless of where you’ll be working.
Steps to Start a Career in Permanent Makeup
1. Complete a training with a reputable trainer through the best permanent makeup courses and schools.
I always recommend in-person training for someone just getting started in permanent cosmetics. Online training is fantastic for learning new skills, but nothing beats hands on learning for someone brand new. Just like with finding an artist to do your procedure, you need to look at reviews for their training. Is their offer cheaper because they’re giving you a deal or is it because they threw it together to make a quick buck? Choose wisely!
2. Practice, practice, practice!
My students receive an ongoing mentorship with me once they receive their certificates. They continue practicing techniques on latex skins and submit it to me for feedback. You’ll likely do some procedures on trusting friends and family until you feel comfortable enough to open your business.
3. Register as an LLC and file all the necessary licenses with your local health department.
Your health department is going to be your biggest asset in making sure you’re doing everything by the book. In the beginning, the path of least resistance may look like networking with established artists to work as a junior artist under them for a bit or even checking with salons that have a vacant room to rent. Starting from scratch can certainly be done, but be prepared for lots of paperwork! Once you have your space and you’re squared away with the government, you’re ready to roll.
FAQs
What are the licensing requirements for permanent makeup artists?
In short, it depends! Each state has different guidelines, so it’s best to check your state’s website. (This website can be a great tool to find out your state’s laws.) Here in Arizona, a permanent makeup artist is considered a tattoo artist so a cosmetology license (or the like) isn’t a requirement. That’s not to say, however, that a salon background doesn’t have a place in this field. Color theory is one of the first things we cover in my course, so having that fundamental knowledge can definitely be helpful. If you’re looking to switch career paths from cosmetology to permanent cosmetics, I think you’ll find the transition less difficult than you may expect.
How much training do I need? Are there essential skills for an aspiring permanent makeup artist?
Training continues long after you leave my studio, but lips and brows are both 20 hours each during our time together. When you leave, you will continue practicing on latex skins and finding models to work on in order to practice and build a portfolio. You’d be surprised how willing people will be to have you work on them once you’ve completed a training, even if you’re not seasoned yet. Continuing education is important as well, but that’s something you’ll do over time. Things have changed so much even just in the last few years and techniques continue to improve as a result.
Is it expensive to get my own permanent cosmetics studio up and running?
It’s less expensive than you might think. I provide all of my students a bare bones supply list so that you can get started on more of a budget and upgrade your studio as you go. There are some things I recommend splurging on from the beginning. One of those purchases is a good table and an ergonomic stool to save your back. Lighting is also important for both procedures and photos for marketing. Don’t go cheap on these! A $30K business loan isn’t necessary for starting out, unless of course you’re looking to purchase or build a studio. That’s a different ballgame in and of itself.
Will I have clients?
I’ve always said there’s more than enough clientele to go around! Every artist has a different style and specialty. How many hair salons can you think of in your town right now? Exactly. There’s plenty of room for other artists without running out of clients. Customer service is a huge part of this job, and taking care of your clients will pay off in the long run as you’re building a name for yourself.
Can I earn a decent living at this?
I know it can be daunting to invest in a new venture, especially in this economy, but it is 100% doable. It is completely reasonable to expect to make a six-figure income in this industry once you get some experience under your belt and you get to dictate your schedule! I started in this field as a way to provide for my kids as a freshly single mother, and it has afforded me the ability to do so much more. If this is something you’re passionate about, don’t wait!
